Mystic Contemplation

This week I will be drawing from the recently released Tarot of the Mystic Spiral (Lo Scarabeo, 2012), a rather non-traditional deck.  That can certainly be seen in this first card!

Today we have the Eight of Wands.  Instead of a sense of speed, movement and messages, here huge wooden columns arch up over a green field.  At the top of the highest arch hangs a ginormous white rose, while underneath a monk-like figure walks.  Some of the meanings associated with white roses are purity, silence and humility, adding to the sense of a place for spiritual contemplation.  This image really gives me that sense of awe and wonder that churches so often inspire with their larger-than-life proportions.  I love, though, that it is all outdoors - a temple to the spirit of nature.

Can you take some time today to allow nature to inspire you?  If you can't get outdoors, what about meditating on a plant or flower?   How about spending some time cloud gazing?

  1. I love this image even though it doesn't reflect the traditional meaning of the 8/Wands at first sight, but it does make sense to me...the beauty of nature, the excitement and adventure it offers..you just need to open your eyes and look around to see..trying to control nature (the pillars), but that doesn't always work..nature is unpredictable...;)

  2. Hi Christiane,

I see what you mean: messages from nature, and the potential for spiritual movement, mabye :)

  4. Hi Ali,

I find it near impossible to post comments via the iPad :( One of the few drawbacks of it... Look forward to reading your thoughts when you get the chance :)

  5. Right - what did I say? I think I said something like....for me this card often symbolises the rapid completion of a project or fast-moving news - neither of which I can readily read into this card's imagery.

Once upon a time the trees were our sacred places and that we can see trees in the distance and these stylised tree trunks of the cathedral columns....could indicate movement through time....but it's not an obvious link. I'd probably struggle with this card, to be honest!

  6. Hi Ali,

I kind of think you just have to read some of these cards intuitively and chuck out traditional meanings :) Depending on the position, it could be about the importance of nature as a source of inspiration...
